Japan Increases Visa Fees for Nigerians and Foreign Nationals

The Japanese government has decided to increase visa fees for Nigerians and other foreign nationals, marking the first adjustment in 48 years since the introduction of the current fee structure in 1978. The new fee structure will see the cost of a single-entry visa rise from 3,000 yen to 18,600 yen, while multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 37,200 yen.

These changes will take effect for visa applications submitted starting July 1, 2023. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stated that the increase is necessary to reflect decades of inflation and changes in exchange rates.

The government does not anticipate an immediate impact on inbound tourism. The decision follows the passage of a bill in Japan's upper house last month, which aims to generate additional revenue to cover administrative costs associated with the growing foreign population in Japan, which stood at 4.13 million at the end of 2025.

The maximum fee for residency status changes is also set to rise significantly.
