Tinubu Sets 95% NIN Coverage Target by December 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with achieving 95% coverage of the National Identification Number (NIN) by December 2026. This directive was announced during the 2026 National Identity Day celebration at the State House in Abuja, where Tinubu was represented by his Chief of Staff.

The current enrolment stands at approximately 142 million Nigerians and legal residents, a significant increase from over 80 million when Tinubu took office. To meet the target, NIMC is expected to deploy more mobile enrolment services and collaborate with licensed enrolment partners.

The government aims to close the identity-registration gap and integrate more Nigerians into the national database, emphasizing the importance of digital identity in accessing government services. The initiative is part of a broader overhaul of Nigeria's identity-management framework, which includes the signing of the NIMC Act 2026 into law in June 2026.

The administration also seeks to enhance public trust and privacy protection in the identity system.
