Nigeria's 2026 Diaspora Day to Address Healthcare Equity

The 2026 celebration of Nigeria's National Diaspora Day, established by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in 2019, will emphasize the critical issue of equitable healthcare delivery. The current state of local health systems in Nigeria is marked by significant disparities, with urban centers receiving approximately 60% of medical professionals and facilities, while about 40% of communities are located more than five kilometers from the nearest medical facility.

The Federal Government has set an agenda to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030, but there is little evidence of progress towards this goal. Rural areas are often neglected in healthcare provision, highlighting the urgent need for reform and equitable distribution of healthcare resources across the country.
