Nigeria Achieves 136 Million Digital Identity Enrolments

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced that Nigeria's digital identity drive has successfully enrolled 136 million legal residents into the national identity database. This achievement was highlighted during a stakeholder meeting led by Kayode Adegoke, the head of corporate communications at NIMC.

The meeting discussed the implementation of the newly signed NIMC Act, which replaces the 2007 NIMC Act and introduces a national identification framework. This framework aims to establish a single trusted identification standard across the country.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General of NIMC, emphasized the importance of ensuring that every Nigerian legal resident obtains a National Identification Number (NIN). The initiative is expected to support the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning's economic plans and enhance the delivery of government services, financial inclusion, and social intervention programs.

Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu described the new law as a landmark reform that will strengthen Nigeria's identity management system.
