Nigeria's External Reserves Hit $54.08bn, Highest Level Since 2008

Nigeria's foreign reserves climbed to $54.08 billion on September 3, marking an 18-year peak and adding $8.51 billion since the start of 2026.
As of September 3, 2026, Nigeria's external reserves touched $54.08 billion according to Central Bank of Nigeria data—a peak unseen since December 2008. This figure signals substantial growth in foreign-exchange buffers accumulated through late summer months, with a steady climb evident in recent weeks.
From January through September 2026, the accumulation pattern stands out clearly. Starting the year at roughly $45.57 billion, the country added approximately $8.51 billion within its first nine months.
The year-on-year comparison sharpens this picture further: Nigeria's reserve position on September 3, 2025 was $41.50 billion, making the 2026 figure represent a 30.3 percent jump—equivalent to roughly $12.58 billion in gains. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso has discussed this reserve expansion in public forums, describing how net external reserves grew from approximately $3 billion during September 2023 to about $40 billion by July 2026.
During the identical span, gross reserves climbed to roughly $52 billion, delivering some ten months of import cover. Cardoso characterized this buildup as proof that difficult reforms implemented over three years were delivering tangible improvements in foreign-exchange liquidity and external financial position.
Strengthening of the naira has paralleled this reserve movement, with the currency trading at N1,315 per dollar in official markets—among its most robust levels in years. Analysts point to elevated crude oil revenues and strengthened foreign-exchange inflows as key drivers of the reserve accumulation.
Daily figures from the CBN reveal reserves fluctuating between $53.90 billion and $53.99 billion during the days before hitting $54.08 billion on September 3.
