Nigeria's NHA Enhances Maritime Safety and Economy

The National Hydrographic Agency (NHA) of Nigeria was established on February 21, 2022, following legislation by the National Assembly, to serve as the central authority for hydrographic and oceanographic activities in Nigeria. Its mandate includes advancing navigational safety, building capacity, and supporting the nation's defense and economic development.

The agency conducts hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, provides accurate nautical charts, and ensures compliance with international standards. It also plays a crucial role in defining Nigeria's maritime boundaries and contributing to the blue economy.

The NHA has recently achieved significant milestones, including the establishment of an International Centre for Electronic Navigational Charts (IC-ENC) training center in Abuja, which will serve as a regional hub for electronic navigational chart training. Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olumid Olugbod, the CEO of NHA, emphasized the agency's strategic importance in enhancing maritime safety and unlocking economic opportunities across West Africa, positioning Nigeria as a leader in the region's maritime landscape.
