NIMC Launches NIN Authentication System for Identity Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a new consent-based verification system called NIN Authentication (NINAuth) to enhance the protection of citizens' identity data amid concerns over the security of the National Identity Database (NIDB). NINAuth enables Nigerians to authenticate their identities without disclosing their raw National Identification Number (NIN) or personal information.

The system offers web, API, and mobile verification services and is intended for organizations integrating with NIMC's identity infrastructure. A key feature is its consent-based approach, requiring explicit authorization from NIN holders before their personal information can be accessed for Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.

NIMC has addressed rumors of a compromised NIN database, stating that such claims are false and that it employs multi-layered security measures. The new system aligns with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, ensuring lawful processing of personal information.

NINAuth will be crucial as NIN is integrated into various services across Nigeria.
