NiMet and CBN Sign MoU to Enhance Economic Data Sharing

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led by its Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Abuja.

Anosike emphasized the importance of integrating weather and climate data into economic research, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and transport. He noted that extreme weather events threaten agricultural productivity and food security, citing a World Bank report predicting that by 2026, 87 million people in East and Southern Africa and 52 million in West and Central Africa could face hunger due to climate change.

The MoU was signed by Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, the Deputy Governor of Economic Policy at CBN, marking a significant step in strengthening the partnership between the two institutions. The collaboration aims to improve the reliability of data for effective policy decisions, especially in monitoring inflation and advising on broader economic policies.
