NISO Addresses Electricity Supply Issues in Nigeria

The Independent System Operator (NISO) announced that the recent drop in electricity supply to distribution companies (DisCos) in Lagos, Abuja, and parts of northern Nigeria was caused by transmission constraints and line outages, rather than insufficient power generation. In a statement released on Sunday, NISO explained that several faults in the transmission network limited the safe transfer of electricity.

Key affected lines included the Olorunsogo-Ayede 330kV Line 1, Benin-Egbin 330kV Line 1, and Benin-Omotosho 330kV Line 1. The northern transmission corridor faced issues after the Shiroro-Mararaba 330kV Line 1 tripped from August 24 to 26, further complicating power distribution.

On August 27, simultaneous tripping of the Shiroro-Mando 330kV Line 2 and Mando-Jos 330kV Line 1 left only one circuit operational for Jos and the north-east. Adjustments were made to allocations for affected areas, including Kano, Kaduna, and Yola.

A temporary constraint in Abuja occurred on August 29, but the lines were restored shortly after, allowing recovery of transmission capacity.
