NISO and WAPP Boost Coordination for Grid Synchronization

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the West African Power Pool (WAPP) are intensifying their technical coordination efforts for the second phase of regional grid synchronization, targeting a milestone in June 2026. During a high-level visit to the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, discussions centered on operational protocols and system studies necessary for the synchronization process.

Engr Nafisatu Asab Ali, Executive Director of System Operations at NISO, emphasized the need for strict adherence to unified operational standards, including frequency control and voltage stability. The NCC plays a crucial role in real-time supervisory control and dispatch, ensuring grid security across Nigeria and the WAPP interconnect.

The discussions highlighted the strategic importance of cross-border transmission infrastructure, particularly the Ikeja West-Sak 330kV line, which serves as a critical link between Nigeria and the Benin Republic. NISO is also investing in grid modernization, including upgrades to the SCADA/EMS system, to enhance situational awareness and response to grid disturbances.
