NISO and WAPP Prepare for West Africa Grid Synchronization

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the West African Power Pool (WAPP) are gearing up for the second phase of the West Africa’s Power Grids Alignment Plan, with a target synchronization date set for June 2026. This initiative follows a high-level work visit to the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, where discussions centered on operational protocols and system studies necessary for the synchronization process.

Nafisatu Ali, Executive Director of NISO, emphasized the importance of adhering to unified operational standards, including frequency control and voltage stability. The NCC will play a crucial role in providing real-time supervisory control and ensuring grid security across Nigeria and the WAPP interconnect.

The discussions also highlighted the significance of cross-border transmission infrastructure, particularly the 330kV line linking Nigeria and the Benin Republic. NISO is committed to ongoing investments in grid modernization, including upgrades to SCADA systems to enhance situational awareness and response to grid disturbances.
