WAPP Project to Boost West Africa's Power Supply

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) North Core Interconnect Project, which is nearing completion, is expected to significantly enhance power supply and stimulate economic growth across West African countries. Engr.

Dr. Sule Ahm Abdulaziz, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), made this announcement during the 9th meeting of the Joint Supervisory Committee held in Abuja.

He noted that the project is anticipated to reduce electricity costs, enhance grid reliability, and ensure stable power supply in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing. The project, which extends over 880 kilometers, has already achieved a physical execution rate of 56% as of December 31, 2025, affecting 5,692 individuals for compensation.

However, challenges such as security concerns and logistical constraints continue to impact the project timeline and costs. Abdulaziz reiterated Nigeria's commitment to accelerating progress along the northern corridor, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among member states and development partners.
