WAPP Chairman Calls for Urgent Reforms in Power Market

During the 67th Executive Board meeting of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) held in Lomé, Togo, on May 4, 2026, Engr. Dr.

Sule Ahm Abdulaziz, the Chairman, urged for decisive actions to strengthen the governance structures and accelerate the development of a reliable regional electricity market. He highlighted the ongoing restructuring efforts necessary for future power integration in West Africa, emphasizing the importance of cross-border electricity exchanges.

Abdulaziz outlined three guiding principles for the reform process, which include maintaining WAPP's mandate, ensuring strong governance, and providing adequate resources for implementation. He stressed that effective governance arrangements are central to WAPP's mandate and that reforms must translate into practical, result-driven outcomes.

Mr. Addoulay Dia, the WAPP Secretary-General, described the meeting as a critical milestone for governance reform and emphasized the need to assess past decisions and identify constraints.

The meeting also introduced three new rotating board members, including Mr. Gallo Saidi and Mr.

Justic Kyer.
