NIWA Enhances Safety Campaign on Lagos Waterways

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified its safety awareness campaign across Lagos waterways as part of efforts to achieve zero boat accidents and improve safety compliance among water transport users. Sarat Braimah, the Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, disclosed this during a meeting with members of the 2026 Dockwork Committee.

She explained that the ongoing safety campaign aligns with directives from the Managing Director of NIWA, Yusuf Girei, who prioritizes the safety of waterway users across the country. The campaign aims to enhance public awareness, ensuring that passenger boat operators and stakeholders adhere to strict safety regulations to prevent boat mishaps.

Braimah noted that passengers have become vigilant in reporting violations, particularly concerning the use of life jackets. Regular inspections of boats are conducted by NIWA's Marine Department to ensure safety standards.

Additionally, the federal ministry of marine and blue economy is collaborating with NIWA to gradually phase out wooden boats to modernize water transport and improve safety standards.
