PIND, Navy, NIWA Boost Marine Safety in Niger Delta

The Partnership for Inclusive Development (PIND), the Nigerian Navy, and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have initiated a collaboration to strengthen marine safety standards in the Niger Delta. This partnership aims to improve safety across the region's waterways, particularly in hard-to-reach riverine communities where water transport is essential for delivering programs to vulnerable populations.

Unlike road transport, marine operations are largely controlled by third-party operators, creating significant safety gaps. PIND organized a two-day training in Warri for boat operators and jetty personnel from Delta, Bayelsa, and Ondo states, focusing on proactive safety measures and risk management.

Mr. Sam Ogbemi Daibo, Executive Director of PIND, emphasized the importance of enhancing skills and awareness among boat operators to address critical risks.

Engr. Rufu Ogbonlato from NIWA highlighted the need for standard operating practices to improve safety outcomes.

The initiative is expected to reduce marine incidents and enhance overall safety across waterways in the Niger Delta.
