NJC Suspends Rivers Judge and Two Others for Misconduct

The National Judicial Council (NJC) suspended three judicial officers for one year without pay due to misconduct, including abuse of judicial authority and unlawful detention of litigants. Justice Sobere Biambo of the Rivers State High Court was found to have ordered the arrest of litigants and imposed fines of ₦300,000 each without following proper contempt procedures.
He was also barred from elevation for three years. The NJC's decisions were made during its 112th meeting on November 3, 2026, chaired by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Justice Hannatu Mohammed Kabir of the Nasarawa State High Court and Grand Kadi Mohammed Sani Salihu of the Jigawa State Sharia Court of Appeal were also suspended for similar violations. Justice Kabir was found to have detained a litigant for 58 days without proper contempt proceedings.
The NJC emphasized that the judges' actions violated the right to a fair hearing.
