NLC Critiques Government's Economic Policies Amid Crisis

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a statement criticizing the federal government's economic policies, using the metaphor of "eating the seed and expecting a harvest" to illustrate the absurdity of current practices. The NLC demands immediate payment of wage awards and tax relief for workers to alleviate the rising cost of living, particularly in light of a projected N30 trillion oil windfall due to the ongoing Middle East crisis.

They argue that the government must share this anticipated revenue with workers, who represent only 15% of Nigeria's workforce, while 85% are engaged in the informal economy. Historical data shows that despite previous oil price surges, poverty levels have increased significantly, with the National Bureau of Statistics reporting a rise in absolute poverty from 54.4% in 2007 to 116.9 million Nigerians living in poverty.

The NLC's demands come amid rising fuel prices and increased living costs, underscoring the need for a more sustainable economic approach.
