NMA Calls for Action Against Fake Beverages in Ondo

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ondo State chapter, has raised an alarm regarding the circulation of counterfeit and adulterated alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in the state. Dr Roland Bola Arohunmolase, the state chairman of the NMA, made this call during a news conference in Akure, emphasizing the urgent need for a crackdown on their production and distribution.
He warned that these counterfeit beverages are not only found in informal markets but have also infiltrated supermarkets, hotels, bars, and other retail outlets, posing significant risks to public health. Medical professionals have noted an alarming increase in cases of liver cirrhosis, kidney failure, and acute intoxication among patients.
Arohunmolase highlighted that these adulterated drinks are produced under unhygienic conditions and may contain harmful substances like industrial chemicals and methanol. He urged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, along with relevant state authorities, to conduct inspections and seize unsafe products, as well as prosecute those involved in the counterfeit beverage trade.
