NMA Issues Warning After 48 Die from Methanol Poisoning

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) issued a warning regarding the consumption of unlabelled and unregistered alcoholic and herbal concoctions following the deaths of at least 48 individuals in Ondo due to suspected methanol poisoning. The affected individuals consumed an adulterated beverage known as “Monkey Tail” in Odigbo, Irele, and surrounding local government areas, with over 182 people impacted.
Dr Azim Adekunle Ashimi, Chairman of the NMA–NAFDAC Liaison Committee, stated that laboratory tests by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) revealed high levels of methanol and Cannabis indica in the beverages. Methanol, an industrial solvent, can cause severe health issues, including irreversible blindness and death.
The NMA urged healthcare providers to be vigilant for symptoms such as sudden visual impairment and metabolic acidosis. They called for a crackdown on illegal distilleries and a public awareness campaign against unregulated alcoholic drinks.
The NMA also reported that 15 suspects had been arrested in connection with the case.
