Rabiu Umar Confirmed as NMDPRA Chief Executive

Rabiu Umar has been confirmed as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) following a Senate screening on May 5, 2026. During the session, Umar emphasized his commitment to strengthening Nigeria's energy security, eliminating supply bottlenecks, and ensuring stable fuel availability nationwide.

His agenda includes enhancing regulatory efficiency, boosting investor confidence, and improving product access amidst global disruptions affecting fuel prices. Umar, who has two decades of experience in the downstream petroleum sector, previously held senior roles at Oando PLC and led a turnaround at Ashaka Cement PLC.

He aims to ensure that Nigeria's 22 depots are operational and maintain stock buffers to guarantee product availability. His nomination received endorsements from industry groups, including the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the Nigerian Petroleum Retail Outlet Owners Association, who expressed confidence in his ability to address sector challenges.
