NMDPRA Uncovers Fuel Under-Dispensing, Threatens Sanctions

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has discovered instances of petroleum retailers providing customers with less fuel than they paid for, a practice termed under-dispensing. This violation of consumer rights has prompted NMDPRA to warn that affected filling stations could face sanctions, including the loss of their operating licenses.

On September 22, 2026, NMDPRA issued a directive for all petrol station operators to check and calibrate their dispensing equipment immediately. The authority emphasized that this measure is crucial for ensuring that motorists receive the correct quantity of petroleum products.

NMDPRA has intensified inspections nationwide to identify non-compliant outlets and has mandated that petrol stations found under-dispensing or using poorly calibrated equipment must take corrective action. The authority also informed major industry groups, including MEMAN, DAPPMAN, IPMAN, and PETROAN, to communicate this directive to their members.
