NMDPRA Warns LPG Retailers in Ogun State on Safety

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), through its Ogun State Coordinator Dr. Akinyemi Atilola, has issued a warning to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) retailers regarding safety practices, threatening sanctions for violations.

During a stakeholder engagement in Abeokuta, Atilola highlighted the critical role of LPG retail in achieving the federal government's gas usage expansion drive while stressing the importance of safety to mitigate risks in surrounding communities. He urged retailers to avoid unwholesome practices, particularly the dangerous decanting of LPG, which can lead to overfilling, gas leaks, and severe fire hazards.

Atilola noted that five gas outlets were sealed last year for breaching safety standards and emphasized the need for ongoing safety training and adherence to operational procedures. The engagement concluded with a 10-point communiqué advocating for self-regulation within the sector and the importance of safety training for members of the LPG union.
