Nnamdi Kanu Files Motion to Halt Terrorism Trial, Alleges Rights Violations

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a fresh motion in the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop his ongoing prosecution on terrorism-related charges following his arrest and repatriation from Kenya in June 2021. Kanu's legal team argues that the government's reliance on the Terrorism Prevention Act 2013 for his prosecution is unconstitutional since the act has been repealed and replaced by the Terrorism Prevention Prohibition Act 2022.

Kanu alleges violations of his constitutional and international human rights during his detention by the Department of State Services, including restrictions on communication with his lawyers and seizure of legal documents. The motion also challenges the legality of his extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.

Kanu seeks the nullification of certain charges and a fair trial.
