NNMDA Calls for Support to Boost Herbal Medicine Research

The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) has lamented inadequate funding, weak research infrastructure, and equipment shortages as significant barriers to the development and integration of herbal medicine into Nigeria’s healthcare system. Director-General Martins Emeje made these remarks on Tuesday during a visit by Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, to the agency's headquarters in Lagos.

Emeje noted that these challenges have impeded efforts to scientifically validate traditional medicines and develop locally produced herbal products. He emphasized the need for a clinical observation laboratory and expanded research facilities across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

Emeje also pointed out the low public awareness of the agency's activities and the poor perception of traditional medicine despite Nigeria's rich biodiversity. In response, Udeh acknowledged the agency's needs and mentioned exploring alternative financing options beyond government budgets, including private sector support and grants.

He also unveiled seven locally developed herbal products during the visit.
