NNPC Celebrates Landmark Court Case Win, Avoids Paying N5bn Damages to Top Politician

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) recently celebrated a significant legal victory as the Court of Appeal overturned a lower court ruling that would have required the company to pay N5 billion in damages to former chairman Senator Ifeanyi Ararum. Ararum had sought redress after being removed as board chairman in 2021.

The appellate court ruled in favor of NNPC, stating that the earlier judgment was delivered in error. NNPC hailed the decision as a landmark victory that spared the national oil firm from a substantial financial payout.

The judgment was seen as strengthening corporate governance frameworks and setting an important precedent in Nigerian company law. In a separate development, NNPC had recently decided to reduce petrol pump prices in response to changes in global crude oil prices.
