NNPP Rejects Planned Pay Rise for President, Others

The New Peoples Party (NNPP) has rejected the proposed salary increase for political office holders, calling it insensitive amid the current economic hardship in the country. The southwest leader of the party, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, criticized the plan, stating that political leaders should be making sacrifices rather than demanding pay rises.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) had announced the proposed salary increment, noting that the last review was in 2008. Ajadi emphasized the importance of reducing the cost of governance and showing solidarity with the citizens who are facing challenges such as rising inflation and unemployment.

He called on Nigerian leaders to emulate other countries where government officials have agreed to cut their pay in times of national hardship. Ajadi also addressed rumors of former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso's defection to the NNPP, stating that the party would reassess the timing and reasons for joining.
