Doctors Demand N1 Million Monthly Salary in Nigeria

Dr. John Omotoso, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagam, has called for a minimum monthly salary of N1 million for doctors in Nigeria.

Speaking on Monday during the 32nd induction of medical graduates from the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Omotoso criticized the poor remuneration and working conditions that drive health workers to seek opportunities abroad. He emphasized that the current entry salaries for medical doctors range between N250,000 and N300,000, which is inadequate given the economic challenges and inflation.

Omotoso urged the government to take drastic measures to address these issues, including prohibiting politicians from seeking medical care abroad. He also recommended declaring a state of emergency in the health sector to implement policies that would improve conditions for healthcare professionals.

Dr. Olusola Monehin, the immediate past ARD president, encouraged graduates to prioritize service and mentorship in their careers.
