UNIPORT ASUU Initiates Indefinite Strike Over Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt branch, declared an indefinite strike on September 17 over unpaid salaries and allowances. This decision was made during an emergency congress on September 16, after the university management failed to resolve issues following a 48-hour ultimatum that expired on September 15.

Branch Secretary Tarila Amakoromo stated that the university administration did not act on commitments made during a meeting on September 11. ASUU's grievances include incomplete payments of lecturers' salaries for June, July, and August 2026, as well as outstanding responsibility allowances.

Additionally, members under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) have not received their due allowances. A significant concern is the exclusion of ASUU members from monthly responsibility allowances received by other unions at the university for over two years.

The strike was initiated after the management's failure to fulfill its promises.
