ASUU at University of Port Harcourt Initiates Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Port Harcourt, represented by Secretary Tarila Amakoromo, announced an indefinite strike on September 16, 2026. This decision came after the university management failed to address several critical demands, including incomplete salary payments for June, July, and August 2026, and the non-payment of Responsibility Allowances to lecturers, particularly those under CONMESS and CONHESS.

Amakoromo noted that ASUU members had been excluded from monthly Responsibility Allowances paid to other unions for over two years. An emergency congress held on September 11, 2026, had given the university administration a 48-hour deadline, which expired at midnight on September 15 without resolution.

Consequently, the union resolved to halt all academic and official duties, with a monitoring team established to ensure compliance across the university's main campus and other centers.
