Ogun PDP Chieftain Refutes Claims of Political Strangulation

Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, addressed concerns regarding the alleged strangulation of political parties in Nigeria. In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, Showunmi dismissed reports suggesting that the current political landscape poses a threat to democracy.

He argued that the difficulties faced by opposition parties are not due to external forces, such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but rather stem from internal crises and a lack of cohesion within the parties. Showunmi stated that political parties must be accountable and cannot expect immunity from scrutiny or legal consequences due to their affiliations.

He emphasized the importance of introspection among party leaders and criticized the tendency to blame external factors for internal failures. Showunmi's remarks come in the context of a recent wave of defections from opposition parties, which he believes should not be misconstrued as a sign of political strangulation but rather as a reflection of poor strategic judgment.
