NISO Confirms No Power System Collapse in Nigeria

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) issued a statement on February 19, 2026, denying reports of a system collapse in the national grid. The incident occurred around 11:54 AM when a protective trip at the Onitsha transmission station led to a temporary outage affecting specific areas.

NISO clarified that the protective trip recorded a trip on a 330kV transmission line, which resulted in local outages but did not cause a nationwide blackout. The incident impacted the transmission corridor, including portions of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) networks.

NISO assured that the national grid remained stable and fully operational, with system frequency within acceptable operational limits. They acknowledged the inconvenience experienced by electricity consumers in the affected areas and urged stakeholders and the media to refrain from spreading unverified rumors, emphasizing that NISO is the authentic source for information regarding grid events.
