Obi Defends Right to Travel Amid Assassination Threats

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, stated that no individual or group can prevent him from visiting any part of Nigeria. His remarks came in response to threats warning against travel to certain areas, particularly following a security incident in Benin City, Edo State.

During a visit to Peter University in Anambra State, Obi insisted that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to move freely across the country. He highlighted his recent trip to Rivers State, which he undertook despite advice to cancel, as he had already accepted an invitation.

Obi expressed his determination to remain active in Nigeria's democratic process leading up to the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for reforms to create opportunities for citizens and strengthen public institutions. He also noted the internal leadership disagreements within the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress, which influenced his political decisions.
