NOUN Launches Nationwide Health Insurance for Students

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has initiated the Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) for its students across Nigeria, effective January 2026. This announcement was made during an emergency meeting of the NOUN Management Committee on TISHIP at the university's headquarters in Abuja.

Prof. Shehu Usman Adamu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, and Chairman of the Committee, emphasized that student welfare is a priority for the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma. Four Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs)—Healthspring, Noor, Novo, and Precious—were unveiled, increasing the total number of HMOs involved in the program to eight.

Each student will be enrolled through their study centre and issued a health insurance card for medical services access. The university's Directorate of Management Information System (MIS) will compile student data for enrollment with healthcare providers.

The initiative aims to provide affordable healthcare to students, enhancing their wellbeing while studying.
