NOUN Professor Calls for Investment in Mathematics Education

During the 41st Inaugural Lecture at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Conference Centre in Abuja, Professor Samson Sunday Afolabi, a Professor of Mathematics Education, called for greater investment in Mathematics Education. He urged the recruitment of more specialists and the establishment of postgraduate programs to strengthen the discipline and support national development.

Afolabi emphasized that Mathematics Education is crucial for developing critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving skills necessary for scientific and technological advancement. He highlighted that students' study habits significantly impact their success in mathematics, advocating for equal learning opportunities.

Afolabi proposed a six-pillar framework for improving Mathematics Education, which includes innovative teaching methods and technology integration. He noted that Mathematics Education ranked third in graduation output among NOUN's undergraduate programs from 2016 to 2024, underscoring the need for more specialists to sustain the program.

He also renewed his request for Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in Mathematics.
