NRG Stadium Renovations for 2026 FIFA World Cup Begin

NRG Stadium in Houston has begun extensive renovations in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The construction work commenced recently, although the design process started nearly seven years ago when Houston was designated as a host city for the tournament.

The project aims to transform the NFL venue into a world-class football arena, featuring a temporary natural grass pitch. This pitch, measuring 81,000 square feet, will consist of Kentucky bluegrass cultivated in Colorado and will be transported to the stadium via refrigerated trucks.

To aid in the preservation of the grass during the tournament, a giant LED grow light will be shipped from Holland. The installation of the pitch, which typically takes 13 weeks, will be condensed to just a few months.

After the tournament, the pitch will be fully removed within two weeks, allowing the stadium to resume its NFL duties.
