NRS to Collect Mineral Royalties Under New Tax Laws

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will assume the responsibility of collecting mineral royalties from mining operations across the country starting January 1, 2026, following the implementation of Nigeria's 2025 tax laws. This development was announced during a meeting in Abuja, attended by the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alak, and NRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji.

The NRS will manage royalty collections, while the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will retain technical regulatory oversight of the sector. This arrangement is part of a broader tax reform initiative aimed at centralizing federal revenue collection and improving efficiency and transparency.

President Bola Tinubu's administration is focused on strengthening non-oil revenue sources, with the mining sector identified as a key contributor to economic growth. The reforms include four significant bills aimed at overhauling the country's tax system, reducing leakages, and streamlining revenue collection processes.
