NRS to Collect Mineral Royalties from January 2026

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will assume responsibility for the collection of mineral royalties across the country effective January 1, 2026. This transition follows the enactment of new tax laws by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, which empower the NRS to administer federal revenue collection.

The announcement was made during a meeting held on April 2, 2026, attended by Dele Alak, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, and Zacch Adedeji, the NRS Chairman. The NRS will collaborate with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to implement a modern, end-to-end digital royalty administration system.

A nationwide sensitization program will be launched to guide mining operators on the new royalty filing and payment requirements. The NRS and the Ministry are committed to ensuring a transparent and orderly implementation of the new royalty framework to support the growth and development of the solid minerals sector.
