NRS Commits to Support Procurement Reforms in Nigeria

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), under the leadership of Executive Chairman Dr Zacch Adedeji, has pledged to provide financial and technical support for the Bureau of Public Procurement’s (BPP) proposed overhaul of the Public Procurement Act 2007. This initiative aims to reduce the number of abandoned government projects and improve accountability in public spending.
During a strategic engagement on Tuesday at the NRS headquarters in Abuja with BPP Director-General Dr Adebowale Adedokun, Adedeji emphasized the importance of effective procurement in encouraging voluntary tax compliance. He noted that abandoned projects represent wasted tax revenue and stressed the need for their completion to protect public resources.
Adedokun revealed that the BPP is pursuing at least 29 procurement reforms requiring amendments to existing legislation, including electronic procurement and community-based contracting. He stated that the current Procurement Act cannot accommodate these reforms, which aim to enhance efficiency and inclusivity in government contracting.
