Nigerian Sports Commission Allocates ₦200m Training Grants to 26 Athletes for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Nigerian Sports Commission (NSC) has disbursed ₦200 million in training grants to 26 Nigerian athletes in preparation for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The grants, distributed by the Elite Podium Board, were carefully selected to support the training conditions and overall preparation of top-performing athletes in various sports categories, including wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, powerlifting, para sports, and more.

The selection process was led by Yusuf Ali, the chair of the Elite Podium Board, and overseen by Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the Commission. The initiative, reflecting a renewed emphasis on athlete welfare, was supported by current President Bola Tinubu.

The grants aim to reassure athletes of continued financial support as they prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. This marks the second time in six months that the Commission has provided training grants to Nigeria's elite athletes, aiming to strengthen the country's historical performance at the Commonwealth Games, where Nigeria has won a total of 271 medals.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
