Nigeria Aims for Six Boxing Golds at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria's boxing team is targeting six gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled from July 24 to August 1 in Glasgow. Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Omonlei Imadu, announced this ambitious goal following a five-day open trial held at the Brai Ayonot Boxing Complex inside the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

The trials attracted 128 athletes, with 101 men and 27 women competing across 10 weight divisions. The next phase of training will determine the final team of 10 boxers, comprising 5 men and 5 women.

The camp will feature 40 fighters, including 20 finalists from the trials. Notable finalists include Patricia Mbata, an African Games gold medalist, and Kenneth Anigboro, who emerged as the top in the 90kg class.

The National Sports Commission's Director General, Bukola Olopade, praised the federation's organization of the event and expressed optimism about Nigeria's chances of surpassing its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the team secured four medals.
