NSC and NRS Call for Waivers to Address Port Delays

The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) are urging shipping companies to grant waivers due to delays in port operations. This appeal was made during a stakeholder engagement held at the NSC headquarters in Lagos. Dr. PiU Akutah, the Chief Executive Officer of NSC, acknowledged the National Single Window (NSW) initiative as a significant milestone for the maritime industry, which went live on March 27. The NSW aims to streamline port processes and enhance efficiency across the sector. However, challenges have arisen, particularly affecting cargo clearance timelines. Dr. Zach Adedeji, Chairman of NRS, highlighted the need for shipping companies to understand the necessity of granting waivers for demurrage and storage charges incurred during delays. The stakeholders expressed confidence in the NSW's potential to improve Nigeria's business environment despite current challenges, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to resolve issues and sustain the benefits of the reform.
