NSC Advocates for Faster Cargo Clearance at Nigerian Ports

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has called for improved collaboration among regulatory agencies at Nigeria's seaports to facilitate faster cargo clearance, reduce cargo damage, and minimize legal disputes stemming from delays. Dr.

Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, made this statement during the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges. He noted that operational lapses due to inadequate collaboration among government agencies contribute significantly to the challenges faced by Nigeria's shipping industry.

Akutah highlighted the proposed Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, which aims to empower the NSC as the statutory port economic regulator, as a potential solution to these issues. He also discussed the importance of timely resolution of maritime disputes to attract foreign direct investment.

Maritime lawyer Chineye David advocated for legislation to protect port terminal operators from liability for cargo damage caused by government delays. Funke Agbor, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, suggested adopting a contemporary international convention for better consumer protection in maritime disputes.
