NSC Targets 20 Gold Medals for Team Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) is confident that Team Nigeria will secure at least 20 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, scheduled from July 22 to August 2, 2026. NSC boss Olopade discussed this during a strategic meeting in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of athlete welfare as a central focus of their preparations.

The NSC has set a target of 16 gold and 20 silver medals, with Olopade expressing optimism that Nigeria can rank among the top five nations at the Games. The welfare plan includes business-class travel arrangements for athletes and a comprehensive welfare package, which will feature nearly 20 apparel items in each athlete's kit bag.

The welfare package is set to be finalized ahead of the training camp beginning June 9 in Abuja. Yusuf Ali, the Chief Executive Officer of the Elit Athlete Development Podium Board, is involved in assessing the medal prospects and ensuring that athletes receive unprecedented support for their preparations.
