Nigeria Targets 22 Gold Medals at Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) of Nigeria has set an ambitious target of winning 22 gold medals at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the NSC, expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's readiness for the global competition, highlighting a shift in mindset and preparation strategies.

Initially, the target was set at 18 gold medals, but the belief within the camp has grown, prompting the upward revision. Olopade attributed this optimism to structural changes within the sports system, which have been supported by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and President Bola Tinubu.

The preparations are bolstered by Nigeria's performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country achieved a record total of 35 medals, including 12 golds, with female athletes contributing significantly to this success. As the Glasgow Games approach, the Nigerian camp is focused on improving preparations and supporting athlete development to surpass previous records.
