NUJ Condemns Wike's Threatening Remarks on Journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) issued a statement condemning remarks made by Minister Nyesom Wike about a Channels TV journalist, describing the comments as reckless and a danger to press freedom. The NUJ, led by President Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, expressed shock at Wike's statements during a media interaction, which they interpreted as an attempt to intimidate journalists and silence the media.

The union withheld its reaction in hopes that Wike would retract his statement and show remorse, but noted the absence of an apology, suggesting that the remarks were deliberate. The NUJ warned that such statements from senior government officials create a hostile environment for journalists, potentially attracting threats and violence against them.

They demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from Wike and called on the federal government to condemn his statements and take steps to protect journalists across the country. The NUJ further urged media organizations and civil society groups to stand in solidarity for the defense of press freedom.
