NUJ FCT Chair Urges Action on Insecurity and Poverty

On May Day, Comrade Grace Ik, the Chair of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, issued a statement in Abuja, calling for urgent and sustained action to tackle insecurity and poverty, which she identified as significant challenges facing workers in Nigeria. She noted that the year's theme, "Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work," aptly reflects the prevailing issues confronting workers across the country.

Ik highlighted that ongoing insecurity and economic hardship undermine productivity, threaten livelihoods, and erode the dignity of labor. She commended journalists in the FCT for their resilience and dedication despite operating in difficult and often risky conditions.

Ik expressed concern that persistent insecurity not only endangers lives but also limits access to information, hampering journalists' ability to perform effectively. She urged the government to intensify efforts to improve national security and implement policies aimed at alleviating poverty.

Furthermore, she called on media organizations to prioritize the welfare of journalists, ensuring fair remuneration and improved working conditions.
