NUPRC Warns on Flare Gas Permit Revocation Risks

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has issued a warning to companies awarded flare gas commercialization permits, stating that failure to make substantial progress within one year could lead to the revocation of their permits. This warning aligns with Nigeria's goal to eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030 and convert flared gas into products that support power generation and economic growth.

Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, the Commission Chief Executive, made this announcement during a visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, in Abuja. According to Eniola Akinkuotu, the NUPRC Head of Corporate Communications and Media, Eyesan noted that 43 flare gas sites were identified for the program, with 27 sites awarded to investors.

The Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP) aims to commercialize flared gas resources, reduce environmental pollution, create jobs, and increase gas availability for domestic industries. The NUPRC also provided updates on the Host Community Development Trust framework established under the Petroleum Industry Act.
