NURTW Demands Control of Okigw Park in Umuahia

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abia State is embroiled in a dispute with park controllers over the control of Okigw Park in Umuahia. The union claims that the park belongs to them and has accused the local government of snatching control.

They have called on the state government to restore their control over the park, which was previously advised by Governor Alex Otti to return to the union. However, the mayor of Umuahia has refused to allow the union to operate there.

The union has been informed that control of the park will revert to them by December 31, 2025. NURTW officials, including state chairman Chukwuma Azodo, have urged the state government to prevent protests from their members.

The conflict highlights the ongoing struggle for control among various transport unions in the area, with NURTW asserting its historical claim to the park.
