NUT Demands Urgent Rescue of Kidnapped Teachers, Pupils

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), under the leadership of President Audu Amba, has called for the immediate rescue of all kidnapped teachers and pupils in Nigeria. This demand was made during a press briefing in Abuja, following the successful rescue of 56 individuals abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, on May 15, 2026.

Amba emphasized the growing insecurity threatening Nigeria's educational sector and urged the federal and state governments, as well as relevant security agencies, to intensify efforts to rescue innocent Nigerians held captive. He called for the full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative, the deployment of adequate security personnel, and the establishment of effective emergency response systems in high-risk areas.

The NUT president expressed sorrow over the murder of two teachers during an attack, highlighting the severe dangers faced by educators and students. He reiterated the union's commitment to protecting the lives of teachers and learners and called for community support to ensure schools are safe.
