Nwoye Critiques SEDC's 2026 Budget; CEO Responds

During a Senate committee hearing on the South East Development Commission's (SEDC) 2026 budget, Senator Toni Nwoye from Anambra North expressed criticism. In response, SEDC's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mark Okoy, stated that Nwoye failed to grasp the wider context of the budget.

Okoy explained that Nwoye's remarks were based on a limited understanding of the budget's objectives, which include enhancing regional security, developing infrastructure, and attracting investment. Okoy highlighted several key initiatives, such as the South East Integrated Security Intervention Program and agricultural projects aimed at boosting mechanized farming.

He also mentioned the importance of creating a financial framework to support youth entrepreneurship in the region. Okoy noted that Nwoye arrived at the budget presentation without adequate prior knowledge, which contributed to his critical stance.

The discussion underscored the necessity for collaboration between the SEDC and state governments to ensure effective implementation of the budget and to foster economic growth in the South East.
